I once grew a rat tail down the channel of my neck I did it to be like Atticus in Mockingbird, played by Gregory Peck. But I didnt make it hard for the powerful to convict the powerless All I did was give gardeners a pencil and ask them to take the Flower Test Theyd been practicing when no one was watching. People would buy different groceries if they werent being observed. Theyd make their salads with toast and their fries wouldnt be curved. Ice cream would be eaten with chopsticks, water drank with straws And people living alone wouldnt share soup with any Dr. Phil Mcgraws. Their mind would be focused on the slippery ice cream. Sometimes I get asked what I did last night or my plans for the next day. Ive become smart enough to say nothing, in an interesting way. Its not that Im boring, or that I dont have or notice anything new. Its simply that I like to spend my time not worrying about what to say to you. I read How To Win Friends and Influence People when I was 19 and it made me lonely. So now I just pretend that Im Tom Hanks on an island, without a volleyball. And I wait around for you to get bored of him and give me a call. For such a large heart, youre quite understanding and very small. Why dont you smoke a cigarette with me and we wont worry at all. And no one will watch us.
