Below is a compelling story of nurses response to the death of a six month old following the closure of a hospital pediatric unit in California. The story has resonance here, as a number of hospitals in Mass. have closed their pediatric units to save money, including Partners Health Care at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Steward Health Care at Morton Hospital in Taunton, and North Adams Regional Hospital, which closed its pediatric unit months before closing its entire facility. The MNA/NNU has been fighting these closures and has proposed legislation to give our DPH to power to prevent them, as well as filing our Hospital Profit Transparency and Fairness Act, which would claw back excessive hospital profits and CEO compensation to create a fund to protect needed services.
