The certification of these individuals makes the Bergen County Police Department one of the first Police Departments in the United States to have a nationally recognized and certified schools sports security program, thus continuing its reputation as a leader in the area of large crowd event security. The Bergen County Police and Bergen County Security are responsible for the security for all county facilities and properties including the review, recommendation and approval of all security policies and practices, emergency plans, and the implementation of security products including, but not limited to, security cameras, access control, physical barriers and lighting. That security oversight extends to providing the primary police services for Bergen Community College, the State of New Jersey’s largest community college as well as security for the Bergen County Special Services School District, the largest school district in Bergen County. The Bergen County Police are responsible for the security at all 21 parks and 5 golf courses within the Bergen County Park system, including all events that occur in those parks. Bergen County, home to almost one million residents, is located directly across the Hudson River from New York City. Bergen County hosts many high profile sporting events including interstate school football games, Under Armour I-95 Classic, Triple Crown Baseball tournament and Diamond Exchange Cricket. These events draw upwards of 10,000 spectators. “Our Parks Director, Ron Kistner has been extremely successful in booking high-profile events at our parks”, stated Chief Higgins. With these events comes the need for increased security. This accreditation will ensure that procedures and policies are properly adhered to. The Bergen County Police are focused on the safety and security of the players, coaches’ staff and spectators at these events. The purpose of the Certified Sport Security Professional (CSSP) certification is to assure that individuals at the middle and upper levels of organizations and who are in leadership roles responsible for the planning and overall security operations of sport venues and events have the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform their job. The Bergen County Police Department led by Chief Higgins has remained vital to the Bergen County community for nearly 100 years because of its ability to adapt to the changing needs and demands of our communities, stated County Executive Kathleen A. Donovan. I am proud of Chief Higgins and Captain Mullin for recognizing the need for this certification and the BCPD for being trailblazers in earning this distinction. The examination conforms to a content outline based on a national job analysis conducted on sport safety and security specialists currently working in the field. The breakdown of the CSSP Knowledge Areas includes: - Business & Facility Management - Emergency Planning - Emergency Management - Legal & Regulatory - Crowd Management - Security Principles & Practices More information on the Bergen County Police Department can be found at bcpd.org.
