Besharam: Eventually, movies from a medium of creativity, entertainment and excellence, have now become a numbers game. The coveted 100 Cr mark is the in thing now. Gone are the days where golden jubilee and silver jubilees were the success determinants. Its now make or break in a matter of 3 days. So how does one ensure that the movie reaches the coveted number? Well, the formula is apparently quite simple. Get the ingredients right – a major star, some songs, some action, some “funny” scenes and viola, your potboiler is served to be treated to a 100 crore ride. But just like how measurements are critical while cooking, they are just as essential while making a film. Which is why a Dabanng worked for Abhinav Kashyap. However, in his second outing, he mixed the things up a little. The end result? An actor who made a mark for himself by not doing run of the mill commercial movies does the regular song and dance sequence and makes a mockery out of it; Two veteran actors who are literally fighting over time on the commode (this is supposed to be funny) and making the el-classico “slip over the banana peel” jokes try to look funny; A new comer who is trying to make a solid impression on the audience and a series of disjointed, forcefully made funny scenes, with nothing coming out of the box here. The story is about a car thief who falls in love with the woman whose car he had stolen and tries to get the car back for her. So what works for the movie? Honestly, almost nothing. The entire movie looks like a badly done 5 course meal where the desserts come on the table before the main course. Probably the only thing that remains with the audience is that Ranbir Kapoor is supposed to be Besharam. Why? I could not figure that out. But no matter what he said, the lady opposite him (Pallavi Sharda) would call him Besharam. Out of the blue two cops (Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor) appear with nothing substantial to do through most of the film. Suddenly, some very forgettable songs would start playing with no context whatsoever. I think people should understand that if a song is being used in the movie, there should be a context to the song as well. You cannot just put them for the heck of it. Another reason why the movie fails is because of the old school dialogues. You would expect firework like dialogues which would amaze and embarrass the audience but it turns into the old school dialogue factory. Effectively the funny lines do not sound funny and the serious scenes look too textbook. Performances: I am a huge believer that Ranbir Kapoor is the next big thing. He has constantly innovated and done things that others would typically not do. And that has been his fortay. Here unfortunately Ranbir was rather disappointing. He looked completely disinterested in the film. And that lack of commitment showed in the performance. Pallavi Sharda as the lead actress stood her ground despite disappointing dialogues and clichéd scenes. Rishi and Neetu Kapoor are effortless in their performance and are able to make the foolish scenes bearable. Direction: Abhinav Kashyap after Dabanng assumed that his formula should remain the same. That did not work for him. The fact that Salman Khan can pull a Dabanng off does not mean anyone can. No matter how good the actor. The editing was very coarse leaving a sense of discontinuity almost throughout the film. If nothing else, this film looked like a poor attempt at copying Rajkumar Santoshi’s Andaaz Apna Apna’s comic sense which completely backfired. Overall: Besharam has nothing to offer for entertainment. Period. My rating: 1.5 stars
