Beware of the Enemy, The Devil.......by Gail Cook I would like to use the scripture I Peter 5:8 in this message. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary, the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. The devil is also referred to as Satan, Demon, Adversary or Enemy in the Word of God. There are some that dont believe there is a devil. There are some that believe there is a devil but know little or nothing about him. The Word of God tells us there is a devil and it tells us some things about this devil. It warns us of this wicked one. I Peter 5:8 says Be sober, be vigilant. To be sober, to be vigilant means to be serious; watchful and alert, especially to guard against danger, difficulties or errors. We are told to be watchful, alert and be on guard because the devil is going about seeking whom he may devour. The devil is working. He is sly, cunning, and deceitful. There are many today who are being overcome by this enemy. You can see the results of this all around you with so many lives being ruined. It seems like every day you hear of something else horrible that has happened that has brought so much suffering, misery and trouble to mankind. The devil is the enemy of all mankind. He is an evil spirit and is against everything that is good or right. In John chapter 10 Jesus says The thief cometh not but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. The devil is a thief and a robber. He tries to rob mankind of anything that is good. The devil doesnt want anyone to have happiness, peace, contentment, eternal life or any of the many blessings that God would have for them. John 8:44 says, He (satan) was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie , he speaketh of his own; for he is a liar and the father of it. What is the purpose of a lie? The purpose of a lie is to deceive. He works to deceive mankind in any way he possibly can. He works to keep anyone from coming to the knowledge of the Truth and getting saved. His ultimate goal is to keep mankind from making it to Heaven. The devil has deceived many and is working through the deceived to deceive others. Matthew 24:24 says, For there shall arise false christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Ephesians 6:12 says, For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. We are not in a physical battle, but this is a spiritual battle. A battle against powers, evil powers. Satan has some power, but God has all power. That is why we need God on our side to be able to overcome the power of the devil. Ephesians 6:11,12 says, Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. What is the whole armour of God? Verse14-17 says Stand therefore, having your loins gird about with truth, and having on the breast plate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. We are in a spiritual battle. We need to be able to see clearly spiritually to be able to see the wiles or ways of the devil. We are not able to see spiritually unless our spiritual eyes have been opened. The only way to have our spiritual eyes opened is to have spiritual life. Spiritual life comes only from God. Spiritual life comes only from a true experience of salvaton. As long as one is living in sin one cannot have spiritual life; For the Bible says sin separates us from God. The sinner is being overcome by Satan everyday.
