Big News for Milton!! Halton regional council voted Wednesday to throw its support behind Wilfrid Laurier University’s efforts to establish a campus in Milton. A report submitted by the Region’s Director of Economic Development, John Davidson, said a Laurier Campus in Milton would help ensure Halton continues to have a strong and skilled labour force to meet the needs of local employers as well as provide Halton residents with immediate access to undergraduate education opportunities, allowing Halton to develop as a complete community while supporting the Region’s overall economic objectives and prospects. Laurier is currently making a submission to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to secure approval and provincial investment to establish the campus in Milton. The university proposes the construction of a full service campus, which would be adjacent to the Mattamy National Cycling Centre (Milton velodrome). The campus would provide a range of undergraduate, liberal arts, science and professional programs and a full range of student services. The proposal will support the creation of initial campus infrastructure for approximately 2,500 students with potential for future phases to support up to 15,000 students. Ancillary services such as residences and food services would be developed within the MEV in partnership with the private sector. The Town of Milton has pledged to donate 150 acres of land to Laurier for a new campus including 100 acres of protected land and 50 acres within the proposed 400-acre Milton Education Village, which is situated west of Tremaine Road, between Derry and Brittania roads.
