Bill Clements, first Republican governor in Texas in over 100 - TopicsExpress

Bill Clements, first Republican governor in Texas in over 100 years. The Turn Texas Blue crowd really should read their history. Texas was a solidly Democrat state, practically since the Civil War, as were most of the southern states. Hell, I was a Democrat in the eighties, that was the only way you could have a voice in a primary, since most of the candidates would be Democrats. If there was a Republican candidate, there would usually be only one, so he or she would be on the general ballot. Oddly, Texas became more urban (ok, suburban), more diverse (huge Vietnamese influx), and more Republican simultaneously, not what demographers are accustomed to. LBJ, Sam Rayburn, Ann Richards, the list goes on, all powerhouse Democrats from Texas. Ralph Hall switched parties in 2004, not because his constituency had changed (it actually was becoming less rural through re districting and sprawl), but because his party had.
