Billy came to the centre through the inspectors who had rescued - TopicsExpress

Billy came to the centre through the inspectors who had rescued him from a pen in a back garden where he had been kept for approximately 2-3 years. It is believed that before the lady’s partner left he had been kept in the house as a family pet. The inspector was wary of Billy as he was growling and snarling, therefore he was maneuvered using a grasper in and out of the van. Billy was very strong on the grasper and bit his lip during moving. He came into the centre with Kennel Club paperwork and a previous owner questionnaire (see attached). The previous owner has said that he is used to both men and women, does not like going to the vets and although he growls a lot he has never bitten. After coming to the centre he has been given a visual health check by the vet but he has not been handled outside of his kennel. Staff have been spending time with Billy from the outside of the kennel and feeding him treats. When sat quietly with him and intermittently throwing treats into the kennel Billy will stand quietly for a short time however he does bark if you move or show him an empty hand. He will take treats through the mesh nicely but if you put your hand up to the mesh without a treat he snarls and snaps at the mesh. Billy does wag his tail a lot and tends to be wagging it when you are feeding him treats, even when he is barking at you. The behaviour he is showing does not seem to be in a nervous manner (backing away, ears back etc), he seems to be quite defensive (ears and body weight forward and erect).
