Biography George Morgan has been a member of Liard First Nation since birth and is member of the Wolf clan. George Morgan is the son of longtime Watson Lake resident, Mary Johnny, who passed into the spirit world in August 2012. George’s maternal grandmother is Eva Johnny (Porter). Eva’s parents were Charlie Porter Sr. and Lucy Porter (McKicka). George’s maternal grandfather was Felix Johnny whose parents were Bessie Carlick and Harry Johnny. On his paternal side George’s grandmother was Helen Miller (Lutz), the first LFN member to live in Upper Liard. Her mother was Old Dot Lutz. George spent his first five years in Watson Lake. He spent six years in the care of the Yukon government living in various group homes and foster homes in Watson Lake, Whitehorse and Dawson City. When George was 10 he was adopted into a James Bay Cree family and moved to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. He returned home to Watson Lake when he was around twenty. George has degrees in Native Studies from the University of Manitoba, Law from the University of Victoria and Journalism from University of King’s College in Halifax. George has worked at all levels of First Nation government including at the band level, the tribal council level, the regional umbrella organization level and at the national level. In Ottawa George worked for a think tank, the Institute on Governance, specializing in good governance; the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, a national aboriginal political organizations; and, for the federal government as an analyst with Statistics Canada and as a communication and by-law advisor with Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada. Most recently George worked with Ta’an First Nation, a self-governing First Nation in the Yukon, as a policy and legislative analyst. George’s and his lovely partner, Tanis, are expecting their first child. George enjoys sports, the outdoors, learning and travel. George has a passion for building First Nation governments.
