Birkbeck Professor Joanna Bourke presents as part of a British Council and BBC World Service series looking at the impact of the war from around the world - Wed 30 July 2014 - ow.ly/zFiV1 One hundred years ago World War One set the course for the twentieth century; for the countries that took part nothing would be the same again. What was the mind set of those who set off to fight the war? How did that mentality change? In the live audience at IWM London, part of Imperial War Museums, children of World War One veterans will join the general public in debate sharing their rare insight. Cultural historian Joanna Bourke turns her attention to Shellshock and the shock of shells in a specially commissioned essay, the centrepiece of the event. The War that Changed the World: Psychology will be the first public event at the newly refurbished IWM London - which was the Royal Bethlehem Hospital for the mentally ill during World War One. A recording of the event will be broadcast by the BBC World Service on 2 August 2014.
