“Black Friday” is a song by American jazz rock band Steely Dan released in 1975. The song is about the first “Black Friday” in the USA which happened way back in 1869. A song that is a history lesson in 19th century laissez-faire economics charted at #37. In 1869 a group of wealthy investors attempted to corner the market on gold by colluding to buy as much as possible to drive up its price. But when the U.S. Grant Administration found out about their scheme the government released millions of dollars’ worth of gold onto the market driving the price down and clobbering the greedy investors. While the song is about events in the US, the lyrics mention an Australian town: Fly down to Muswellbrook… Muswellbrook is a rural town two hours north of Sydney known for coal mining and horse breeding - not kangaroos. Band member Donald Fagen explained the line “With nothing to do but feed all the kangaroos in 2007 this way: I think we had a map and put our finger down at the place that we thought would be the furthest away from New York or wherever we were at the time.” (3:41 minutes) SOURCES: songfacts/detail.php?id=3415.
