Blackwater Canyon Rail Trail Date: Sunday, September 29, 2013 - 07:00.Blackwater Canyon Rail Trail September 29 We’ll walk half the famous Blackwater Canyon Rail Trail at what should be near-peak fall foliage. We start in Douglas along the North Fork of the Blackwater River. Pause at the awesome Douglas Falls, initially thought by early explorers to be the huge falls that is today’s Blackwater Falls. We continue high above the confluence of the North Fork with the mainstem Blackwater. On we go down the rail trail’s gentle grade, enjoying fall foliage, canyon views and landscapes, and the deep hardwood forest. We stop at Tub Run, where the historic culvert provides a scenic break point. Then we reverse ourselves and retrace the trail back to Douglas. Small hand tools - clippers and light saws - and gloves would be useful - though not necessary - to help remove some of the twigs and small branches that came down in the 2012 storms. Distance is approximately 7 miles. The grade is gentle; the distance makes this hike moderate. Nearest town: Thomas, WV.
