Blessed Lancelot Andrewes was the Bishop of Winchester, a spiritual writer, and oversaw the translation of the Authorized (King James) Bible. He is considered one of the Caroline Divines of the Church of England. Andrewes was a High Churchman, and was known for his humility, piety, and charitableness. He had a high view of the Holy Eucharist, affirming the Real Presence, and a change in the elements, while leaving the mode of Presence a mystery. He affirmed the sacrificial nature of the Eucharist, and that adoration is appropriate. His works are included in a multi-volume Library of Anglo-Catholic Theology, which was published between 1833 and 1841 by scholars associated with the Oxford Movement. His best-known work is the Preces Privatae or Private Prayers, edited by Alexander Whyte in 1986. Lancelot Andrewes Press publishes the Private Devotions of Lancelot Andrewes as translated by John Henry Newman and John Mason Neale, edited by William S. Peterson.
