Blessings on this first day. Join us for worship at Hyde Park Presbyterian Church. Jesus’ life and death teach us that compassionate love is the goal and crowning achievement of the Law. Compassionate love calls us to lay aside our narrow understanding of what is right and wrong. Compassionate love encourages us to welcome all people. Compassionate love moves us to reach out and touch people, who are bent over, bent over by illness, suffering, financial concerns, lack of resources, imprisonment, relational problems, despair, fear, bent over by war and social strife and the terror that accompanies them. The world is not so very different than it was in Jesus’ day. Bent over people are still with us, and they are seeking what they have always sought, a better life, a warm welcome, and hope for the future. Today, Jesus is calling us to stand up straight and tall and see the world as it is with its needs, its brokenness, it groaning. Stand up straight and tall and hear the cries of hurting, the sick, the excluded and the dismissed. Stand up straight and tall and look at people with respect and love and compassion. Stand up straight and tall and touch the lives of those bent over and weighed down by the world. Stand up straight and tall so those who are bent down can also stand straight and tall. May we who are standing straight and tall "... not be ashamed or slow to do this humble work." (Mother Theresa).
