Book Challenge. Tagged by my soul sister, Hillary Jordan. List 10 books that have stayed with you. Dont take more than a few minutes & dont think too hard. They dont have to be the right books or great works of literature, just books that have affected you in some way. Tag a few friends. Here are my 10. THE ANARCHIST COOKBOOK - Needed special permission to read it at the library. As a kid, this was the first time I realized that books could be dangerous. THE POOL OF FIRE by John Christopher - Read this in the 5th grade. Main character blows himself up to save everyone else (whoops, spoiler!) My first exposure to the concept of noble sacrifice in fiction. X-MEN #137 - Comic geeks will immediately understand this. DEATHBIRD STORIES by Harlan Ellison - Before this book was banned from our 7th grade library, this collection of short stories was passed around more than the Suzanne Somers issue of Playboy. THE HARLAN ELLISON HORNBOOK - More than ANY other book, this collection of essays made me want to be a writer. I later bought Harlans first typewriter, which was forged in the fires of Mt. Doom. Ahhhh...my...preciousssss... THE LONE RANGER AND TONTO FISTFIGHT IN HEAVEN by Sherman Alexie - Ill never forget this line: I was conceived during one of those drunken nights, half of me formed by my father’s whiskey sperm, the other half by my mother’s vodka egg. I was born a goofy reservation mixed drink. When poets write fiction, something magical happens. BLANKETS by Craig Thompson - Heartbreakingly honest graphic novel memoir. You will want to hug this book and wipe your tears on the pages. PLEASE LOOK AFTER MOM by Kyung-Sook Shin - This book changes you. It altered the way I remember my parents. NORWEGIAN WOOD by Haruki Murakami - Sort of a Japanese CATCHER IN THE RYE, but better, autobiographical, more honest, more painful, more fulfilling. But...some people hated Catcher, so your mileage may vary. THE BRIEF WONDROUS LIFE OF OSCAR WAO by Junot Diaz - I got every geeky, D&D, comic book-inspired sub-reference. This book was speaking my language. Tagging: Luis Alberto Urrea, Alan John Bennett, Jinhee Christine Kim
