Born on this day in 1949 was Tom Verlaine. He was the guitarist & vocalist for New York band Television. Marquee Moon was the debut album from Television and deservedly it achieved critical acclaim when released yet sold poorly in the USA but hit top 30 in the UK. MM is one of those albums that not that many people have heard of but it must be part of every worthy music collection! Compared to their contemporaries at the venue CBGB’s The Ramones, Blondie or Patti Smith Television stuck out like a sore thumb, even compared to the Talking Heads…they were very different. While other groups were busy playing short, to-the-point punk rock, Television was mixing the immediacy of punk with the technical skills of progressive and jazz groups. The two duelling guitarists (that could actually play) the other being Richard Lloyd meant you were gonna have some art going on. The title track, Marquee Moon is a ten minute epic of new music heaven. You will hear the obligatory jump-start effect of punk rock in the opening track See No Evil but this wasn’t where this album was going. Television still had a raw edge but definitely were looking for more creativity than punk was going to give. Marquee Moon is easily one of the finest releases of the late 1970s and rates among the top albums of the New York scene. https://youtube/watch?v=jlbunmCbTBA
