Boys Varsity Soccer Draws with Browning Read all about the game right here! Boys Varsity Soccer Draws with Browning By BVS beat writer Eric Barber On Monday, Boys Varsity Soccer drew with Browning by a score of 1-1. While not a win, the lions stayed unbeaten in 6 straight games. Their record is now 7-2-1. Coming into the game, Freshman Anthony Campoverde said, “Even though we have a big game on Wednesday against LFNY, we need to stay focused on the task at hand.” Browning definitely gave Columbia a challenge, as the Lions drew their first game of the season. Junior manager Josh Adamson described the game as, “A tale of two halves. We dominated the first half and the second half was pretty even.” In the first half, the Lions pressed up high and were aggressive in their attack. They had many chances, but did not convert until midway through the half. Receiving a pass from Junior Danny Golden, Freshman Ryan Weiss shot the ball, but it was blocked. This didn’t stop the attack. Weiss got the rebound and put the ball swiftly past the keeper. Columbia had many chances until the end of the half. In the second half, the possession stats were fairly even and the Lions relied on the shot-stopping prowess of Junior goalie and captain Jesse Sandler. He accumulated an amazing total of 10 saves. But towards the end of the game, around the 70th minute, Browning converted on a corner kick that even Sandler couldn’t stop. The kick came in and a Browning player headed the ball with authority into the net. In the closing moments of the game, Browning had some chances to score the go-ahead goal, but stout defense by the Lions helped maintain the draw. Sophomore striker Alex Baselga thought that it was a disappointing result, “We had many chances, but we didnt manage to put them away. We were the better team and we deserved to win, but goals are not deserved, they are scored, and as a result we tied.” While the Lions got a point, Junior captain Spencer Cibelli also thought it was a disappointing result “We were the better team and we were leading most of the game.” The Lions sit in second place behind LFNY, who they play on Wednesday. It is unquestionably the most important game of the season if Columbia Prep is going to win the league. Cibelli added, “We need every point possible in order to keep up with LFNY.” The CPTV goal tally is as follows: Ryan Weiss 10, Spencer Cibelli 5, Alex Baselga 4, Nathanel Cheney 4.
