Brandi asked me about safe for people and planet de-icers for your steps etc. This was my reply: Ok, so looks like nothing is ideal...sorry :( most salts, even eco-friendly ones are harmful for soils, vegetation and animals paws etc. But if you do use salt, use something like calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) good to -7, potassium chloride (KCL) good to -4 or calcium chloride (CaCl2) good to -23. Try to use as little as possible and if they have safe dies in them, then itll help to know how much you are using. After -4 degrees, to help them along you can add sugar to the mix. Buying organic sugar to de-ice your steps seems a bit silly, but advertise it if you can ;) Sand and gravel arent very good options either as they wash away in the spring and clog up the sewer system and are carriers for other contaminants. Rock salt or sodium chloride are the cheapest and worst salts and only work to -7 the options I listed are 10-20x more in cost the best is elbow grease. when it snows shovel and sweep to keep it off. also is a 3:1 mix of white vinegar to warm water, put in a spray bottle and spray on windshield to avoid frosty windows in the morning that you have to scrape. maybe try it on your steps? not sure if it works on cement the same as windows, but some say it does. alfalfa meal is apparently good, but likely would get the inside of your house all messy...but it melts ice due to the nitrogen in it and fertilizes the soil in the spring. hope this helps! its a tuff one, ah Canada ;)
