Breathe........sigh. I got an A on my Term Paper in Religious Studies OT confirming or denying patriarchy system. I compared Even with Sarah and Hagar. On the whole, this is a strong essay. You have a clear thesis, and you cite evidence from the text to support your thesis. Best of all, you make copious use of the textbook and course concepts as you discuss the depictions of Eve, Sarah, and Hagar. You do great work relating Sarah and Hagar not only to patriarchy generally, but to very specific dimensions of the ancient social and economic system. You are thus able to detect nuance. Sarah may be subordinate to Abraham, but Hagar is of even less status than Sarah. Also, the essay is very well written. There are some weaknesses. First and foremost, you treat Abraham as a landowner. Though he did purchase a tomb eventually, he was a semi-nomad, not a landowner. The issue of landownership was of more immediate concern to the much later generations who would have read and studied these texts. We must distinguish, at times, what the texts depict and how the authors/editors intend for the texts to impact later audiences. Along these same lines, we could ask if the impact of the stories of Abraham and Sarah was more complex than simply reinforcing patriarchy. Most obviously, Sarah frequently bosses Abraham around and comes off as the stronger of the two. When Abraham does pass Sarah off as his wife, are we really supposed to accept and approve of such action, or is it implicitly criticized?
