British Vane A-Class Championships (Day 1) There was 17 boats that turned up for this prestigious regatta hosted by Fleetwood MY&PBC. The sailing conditions were difficult with waves creating a large chop at the clubhouse end of the lake and as well as the wind blowing from the west at 20mph, gusting 28mph at times, made these elegant large yachts power to windward with their skippers running frantically to keep up with them also down wind. Inevitably the 17 boat fleet started to reduce as some boats were damaged during the racing. Repairs continued throughout the day, but still these boats would perform to their best in such strong wind conditions. David Bell sailing a John Simpson design yacht sailed admirably throughout the day to make an excellent start to his campaign. However, there is along way to go before crossing the finishing line on Friday afternoon. Locals Derek Preistley started very well and Graham Butler was also very fast today before sustaining damage. Graham has a lot of re-sails and will make up ground on the top 3 if successful. Plenty to play for tomorrow.
