Brocade weaving - #Artipedia Read here: bit.ly/BrocadeWeaving Mughal emperor Akbar heavily patronized ‘zari’ and ‘brocade’ work. Brocade weaving is a traditional art of weaving which renders the decorative brocade motifs on the fabric such that it gives the illusion that the woven motifs are embroidered separately. Varanasi is the prime brocade-weaving hub in India and it has been so all throughout history. Brocade weaving was thriving here back in the Vedic times and reached its pinnacle during the Mughal era. Brocade is a shuttle-woven fabric (usually) which is woven with rich designs and motifs as part of the weaving process itself. Zari (gold/silver thread) is usually used along with silken threads in brocade weaving.
