Brownhills balti house wins healthy eating award Last updated: 27/06/2014 16:34:08 A balti house in Brownhills is the first hot food takeaway business in the borough to receive an award for offering healthy eating options on their menu. Cardomon Spice, in High Street, Brownhills, has scooped the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards in Walsall Council’s Health Switch Awards Scheme. The restaurant has taken a number of steps to ensure there are a number of healthy options on the menu which has helped widen their appeal to customers who are becoming increasingly health conscious. The business has been awarded with three certificates to display on the premises. The aim of the scheme is to encourage hot food takeaways to offer healthy alternatives to help tackle obesity in the borough. Zaf Iqbal, manager at Cardomon Spice, said today: “We are delighted to become the first business to win the bronze, silver and gold awards. “We have always considered healthy options but the scheme was fantastic because the officers gave us advice and tips on how to make our menu even more healthy by cutting down on sugar and salt, offering more vegetables on the menu and offering water to our customers on the tables. “They are slight changes which haven’t compromised the taste of our food, but hopefully will encourage people to eat a little healthier and will attract more customers who want to stick to a healthy diet,” he added. Environmental Health Officers in collaboration with the Public Health Service at Walsall Council have created the Health Switch Awards Scheme where hot food takeaways in the borough are asked to provide low fat, low sugar and low salt alternatives on their menus to give customers the option to eat more healthily. Takeaways that meet the criteria for the Bronze, Silver or Gold Award will be rewarded with a certificate to display on their premises. The award scheme aims to work with the business to identify changes that it could make to the choice of food and make it more healthy whilst widening the appeal to customers who are becoming increasingly health conscious. All the criteria in the scheme has been designed to be as low cost as possible or no cost to implement. The scheme is open to hot food takeaways which have a 4 or 5 Food Hygiene rating score and they are asked to provide healthy alternatives on their menus in order to give customers the option to eat more healthy. Leader of Walsall Council, councillor Mike Bird, said: “Hats off to everyone at Cardomon Spice who are the first to achieve this healthy eating award. “Let’s hope it encourages other hot food takeaways in the borough to follow in their footsteps and use the scheme to offer healthy alternatives for our residents.” To be eligible to participate in the award, your premises must satisfy the following criteria: • You must attain a score of 5 (Very Good) or 4 (Good) on the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme; • There must be no statutory nuisance arising from or actively being investigated from the premise; • Trading Standards / Environmental Health must not be investigating any complaints against your business in relation to food standards / food safety.
