Buffy Fish Owl in its habitat. 19th June, 2014 Sunderban Tiger - TopicsExpress

Buffy Fish Owl in its habitat. 19th June, 2014 Sunderban Tiger Reserve After a rather uneventful day, we came across this bird in the falling light of late afternoon in a patch of dense mangrove near Dobanki, Sunderbans. The forest patch was mostly dominated by Avicennia and Ceriops species. A few kms from this spot, we also came across another individual sitting on a nest. The bird could hardly be made out because of the nest position. The nest is presumably an abandoned one of a raptor. I was not aware of Buffy Fish Owls nesting in this season. Any information will be welcome. All the images of Ketupa owls emerging from Indian Sunderbans seems to be of Buffy Fish Owls. Till now, I have not seen a convincing image of Brown Fish Owl from Sunderbans, which is a common bird all over south of Bengal. This makes me question the earlier sight records of Brown Fish Owl in Indian Sunderbans. [Image licensed under Creative Commons license - CC BY-NC-ND 3.0]
