Built in Louisville, Kentucky, for use on the Brazos River, the steamboat “Laura” made an important trip up that river on this date in 1837. The Laura” transported the Allen brothers to Houston and in doing so became the first steamboat to ascend above Harrisburg. The ship had been in use in Texas since 1835 and was used to tow Texas Navy vessels in the Revolution and to transport such notables as Republic of Texas president David G. Burnet, his cabinet, and Antonio López de Santa Anna. Another individual who was transported by the Laura was William Moore whose correspondence includes a description of his travels aboard the steamboat while on the Brazos River in 1835. Information about this document, a part of the museum collection, can be found on our website & on the Texas Archival Resources Online (TARO) website.
