Bunkai or free-fighting from ude-tanren / kote-kitae. I am curious, do any folks here practice either individual waza (bunkai especially) or a free exchange of techniques out of kote-kitae (ude-tanren) drills? And as a follow up, where you explicitly taught this, or is this something you just did naturally during informal practice. My first teacher did techniques/free-exchanges in kote-kitae during formal practice, but I have noticed people seem to do this naturally in informal training... sadly I think they often just saw this as goofing-off during informal training, not fully realizing that kote-kitae is actually a great platform for bunkai practice and free-fighting (usually emphasizing brief exchanges before returning to the drill). In a sense this is sort of an open secret, seems like lots of people do it, but it is very rarely discussed as a formal training method. Any thoughts on why this is?
