A Primary school in the Marachi slums of Busia Town has produced the top candidate in KCPE released by Education cabinet secretary Jacob Kaimenyi on Friday. She is set to join Starehe Girls owing to her vulnerable status. Meanwhile, a Teso North school has broken the jinx of not scoring above 400 marks when the top student scored 424 marks in the exams released by Education cabinet secretary Jacob Kaimenyi on Monday. Kenan Paul who had been consistent in his performance looks set to join Alliance High School which was his first choice. Victor Onyango was second with 400 marks and may join Nairobi school. The school had 10 candidates who scored between 350 marks and 399 with six scoring between 300 and 349. The school sat for their first exams in 2011 with the top student scoring 396 marks. In 2012 two students top scored with 396 marks with the top students in 2013 scoring 395 marks. King David Academy from Kolanya Zone which was making a debut in the national examination had one student, Frandel Wanjala scoring 400 marks. The school had eight candidates scored between 350 and 399 marks with 12 scoring between 316 and 349 marks for the school to attain a mean score of 349. In the neighbouring Kolanya Girls Boarding school, the top candidate, Marceline Amaase scored 374 marks. Busia County which had not had any cases of irregularities until 2013 was among 32 counties which recorded case(s) of cheating in 2014 KCPE. Although not with serious disparity like five schools from Northern Kenya, Busia, according to education sources, had one cheating malpractice by a Nambale school. Last year Huduma Academy in Simba Chai, Teso South had its results cancelled after the school was found cheating in the 2013 KCPE. Generally, individual results from various schools indicated the County performed better and is geared towards sending many students to national schools next year. The Executive Secretary Kenya Private Schools Association Busia County Michael Ikolak has appeal to Kaimenyi to make form one selection an all inclusive instead of giving students from public schools an edge over those from private schools. “According to the bill of rights everybody is equal in the eyes of the law,” Ikolak said.
