But the quality of care in the United States is not excellent. Latest reports show that the number of patients dying unnecessarily in US acute-care hospitals annually has risen to 210,000. Failure to rescue means youre stone cold before staff find you and its too late to reverse the process. Lethal infections result from not being turned frequently enough, cut-backs in housekeeping services and many other shortcuts in care. Layoffs of essential bedside and support personnel, the dropping of services and the shuttering of facilities are driven by corporate-style healthcare reform at the state and federal levels. In Massachusetts, the nurses and others are circulating petitions right now to counter this travesty. Were trying to get questions on the 2014 ballot that would establish enforceable safe staffing standards and redirect revenue from super-profitable institutions to community hospitals at risk. All of healthcare is a fierce battleground right now as we struggle to establish a just healthcare system in which access, affordability, quality and equality are all addressed and guaranteed.
