Buxton residents affected by inconsistent water supply –GWI says water rationing due to prevailing dry season Guyana Chronicle October 2, 2014 THE inconsistent supply of water in Buxton, East Coast Demerara, has been a sore issue for residents over the past few months. Residents have complained that the supply is poor and this is affecting their daily lives. Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle, the residents explained that their complaints have been forwarded to the relevant authorities on numerous occasions, but nothing has been done to date. Consequently, residents are under pressure to find potable water for their daily needs and sometimes they are forced to purchase water. The Buxton community currently experiences water outages for some six hours (09:00hrs – 15:00hrs) and are forced to seek other sources of water to conduct their daily activities. WATER RATIONING When contacted for a response, the Guyana Water Incorporated explained that they have started rationing water supplies, owing to the prevailing dry season conditions in Guyana. GWI’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr. Timothy Austin, said, “Because of the long dry season and the high usage of water GWI reduces the flow of water pressure and restores it back during peak hours. “During the dry season, water shortage looms as levels in the conservancies are at an all-time low and citizens could face stricter water rationing with GWI reducing water flow during off-peak hours, when persons would likely be at work.” Additionally, Austin stated that the GWI has simply “reduced” the supply, which causes a drop in water pressure. However, he assured that because of the high usage in the area, the pressure in the water will not support all the pipelines to facilitate the homes. The GWI is pleading with consumers to conserve on water but it is monitoring the current water supply in the area daily. (By Clestine Juan)
