By Christie Southern Edmond adopts school storm shelter plan Edmond School Board members Monday adopted a plan to look into storm shelters in their schools to protect the district’s 22,500 students from destructive tornados as an operational goal for the year. Susan Parks-Schlepp, the district’s public information officer, said the board made it a priority to look into the needs of their schools in the event that another dangerous storm or tornado threatened the city. “Safely sheltering our students during violent weather has always been a priority in this district but it has definitely become more of a priority since the Moore tornado in May,” Parks-Schlepp said. A storm sheltering capacity report presented to the board identified six elementary schools in the district in need of shelters or safety rooms. “Ideally our school board would like for all of our shelters to have a dual purpose, a shelter and classroom or a shelter and gymnasium,” Parks-Schlepp said. “The challenge for our district is that there is no one size fits all.”
