By now I am sure many of you have read about the latest low carb study to hit the media. The study took 150 obese individuals and gave half of them a low carb diet and the other half a low fat diet. The results will tell you that the low carb group lost on average 8 pounds more than the low fat group. They did not change their physical activity and the study did not restrict their caloric intake. Everything was self reported. I note this because it is important to understand as self reports can be widely inaccurate. What should you take away from this study? Well, not that much actually. Firstly, 12 pounds lost in a year on average is not that exciting of a result. Secondly, weight loss still ultimately comes down to creating a caloric deficit. I think what this shows us is that it may be slightly easier to create a sustainable caloric deficit using low carb than it is with low fat. And even that is questionable with a self reported study. Ultimately, this does not mean low carb is the answer you are looking for in your weight loss. Find the foods, activities and habits that work for you in your healthy pursuits. npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2014/09/01/344315405/cutting-back-on-carbs-not-fat-may-lead-to-more-weight-loss nytimes/2014/09/02/health/low-carb-vs-low-fat-diet.html sixpackabs/new-study-what-is-low-carb-good-for/
