By way of a continuation of my post from last night, I have a young student now whos suddenly begun to play with far more determination and curiosity than hes shown before. I still cant get him to practice rudiments and he can only barely read musical notation but his timekeeping and sense of feel are coming along very nicely. Back in August I introduced him to Gentle Giants Moog Fugue as a fairly simple straight-ahead groove; we hadnt touched on it since then but during yesterdays lesson we returned to that piece. He played through it quite well but I also then suggested that we try having him improvise around the set using the rhythms of the melody as a motif while I played time. After telling me this wouldnt be a problem because I sing that song to myself all the time in school he seriously NAILED that improvisation.
