CAMERA CREWS CONVERGE ON CITY FOR HISTORIC GREYHOUND RACE Sheffield will make history next week when the citys greyhound stadium welcomes national TV crews for a renowned annual sporting race. Owlerton Greyhound Stadium is staging the longest ever TV Trophy race - the equivalent of a marathon for the dogs - on Wednesday 6 August. Six of the countrys best greyhounds who have qualified for the TV Trophy final will compete at Owlerton over a 915 metre distance in front of Sky TV cameras. Connections of the winning greyhound will receive a trophy and £8,000 in prize money. The famous TV Trophy was first contested in 1958 and has taken place annually ever since. It is the first time Sheffield has hosted the prestigious event. John Gilburn, managing director at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, said: This is set to be a really special night for Sheffield and Owlerton Greyhound Stadium. The TV Trophy was first broadcast on the BBC, but since 1998 it has been covered by Sky and over the last five decades the event has developed a reputation as one of the highlights of the UK greyhound racing calendar. Were expecting a big local turn out at Owlerton for this family occasion as well as a large number of competitors and spectators from around the country. Last year, the event was run over 843 metres. At 915 metres, the 2014 competition will be the equivalent of a 26 mile marathon for the greyhounds. We look forward to crowning the TV Trophy winner! The event is one of five meetings taking place at Owlerton Stadium that will be broadcast on Sky TV this year and an To celebrate the staging of the TV Trophy, Owlerton is putting on a number of special offers including admission, a racecard and a three-course meal in the Panorama Restaurant for £10 and admission, a racecard and hot and cold buffet in an Executive Box for £10 per person.
