CARE VOTE IN OREM- I submitted this to one of the mayoral candidates in Orem. Im curious to hear your perspective. I read your message about CARE and I appreciate your perspective. My struggle with the program is the process of who gets to pick the winners and losers. I run a sports business here in Orem. We are located on 521 N. 1200 West in the same strip mall as Center Stage Dance Studio. Last year we were recognized by USA Wrestling as the largest club in the country. My struggle with a tax and the spending of the money from this tax is that the government gets to pick the winners and losers. How is this any different from Solyndra? Let me illustrate. We are in the same building as Center Stage Dance Studio. Center Stage is not an organization that needs help from the tax payer; however, I venture to guess as hard as they are campaigning for the vote that they are receiving a good chunk of money from CARE. I’m sure they receive grants to produce shows that they already produce for a profit. The grant from CARE adds to their bottom line profit, but why should this be funded by the taxpayer? On the other hand, an organization like Mettle Wrestling that runs the largest high school wrestling tournament in the state that attracts 70 schools from 10 different states and manages USA Wrestlings Kids Nationals that attracted 1400 athletes from 38 different states last year sees no benefit from the tax. I recognize the value of attracting events to our community, but I’m tired of watching the producers of Stadium of Fire, Dancing Under the Stars, and other profitable events get the majority of the money from these types of programs. Help me understand why government should get to choose the beneficiaries of the money from this tax? Help me understand why I should change my vote to Yes.
