Writer: Miranda Harcourt and Stuart McKenzie Producer: Last Tapes Theatre Company in collaboration with JustSpeak Director: Jeff Szusterman Production season: November 12-27 Rehearsal details: Part time - Oct 21 – Nov 11, Mon – Fri, 2pm-6pm Auditions: Fri August 30th, 1pm-6pm, Central Auckland – location TBC ‘Portraits’ character briefs This play has four characters - 2M;2F - and these will be played by 2 actors - 1M;1F Female Characters Fleur: Mother to Nathan (now 21 and away at Uni) and the surviving mother of Tracey - who was raped and murdered by Grant four years ago, when she was fifteen. Fleur’s married to Donald. They live in a semi-rural house near a small town in New Zealand. Fleur is a teacher and has a strong and dedicated sense of family. Her mum and dad live closeby - dad had a stroke at least five years ago - and Fleur is close to them. She is a sensitive and empathic person. Fleur and Donald prop each other up. Mel: Married to Grant and the mother of his two kids. Mel has a limited education and low self esteem. She tends to render herself removed from experiencing her feelings, i.e. looking at them as an impassive observer - as if watching a movie. She suffered at Grant’s hands. And after the murder, the community set their house afire. Now living at her mum’s with their two boys, Justin and Robbie. (This is away from the town the murder took place.) Male Characters Donald: Father to Nathan (now 21 and away at Uni) and the surviving father of Tracey - who was raped and murdered by Grant four years ago, when she was fifteen. He’s married to Fleur they live in a semi-rural house. Outdoorsey. Tradesman. Practical. Caring. Possesses a real sense of duty and responsibility - because that is what you do - but he loves doing it - it’s not just being dutiful. And to be robbed of that duty of care - for any reason - is a bitter pill. His powerlessness to protect his daughter when she most needed him is something that will haunt him for the rest of his life. Fleur and Donald prop each other up. Grant: In prison for the rape and murder of Tracey. Married to Mel and father to their two boys, Justin and Robbie. Whilst in prison has undergone therapy and speaks with that sensibility. Not confident and described (by Fleur) as “spidery”. Acknowledges that he is not a powerful man. Has come to terms with the rape - as he has been able to trace where that desire has come from in his past - but cannot really come to understand the murder: at the outset. • • CHERIE MOORE DIRECTOR Last Tapes Theatre Company 021 72 3330 [email protected] lasttapestheatre.co.nz
