CGME LABORATORY - The Story - Part IV - Prospective Outcome of the CGME Lab Project The first objective would address the need of basic research in traditional rice biodiversity and their nutritional and therapeutic properties, which are systematically neglected in mainstream academic research. The laboratory will examine most of the 1000 land races from Basudha’s accession. The outcome of this would provide a large spectrum of hitherto unexplored genetic material. The laboratory will focus on molecular genetic analysis of folk rice varieties, and on quantification of vitamins, lipids and anti-oxidant compounds in rice. The second objective relates to a number of Critically Endangered plants, of unknown ecological and cultural significance. The outcome of this would be that the laboratory, with tissue culture facility, will help conserve the evanescent species for posterity. The third objective is to fill the lacuna of taxonomic identification of planktonic organisms, surviving in a few sacred ponds. The outcome of this would be that the laboratory will provide a scope for students-researchers to identify the neglected planktonic composition of the sacred ponds.
