CHRISTMAS DAY WITH FAMILY BUT NOT QUITE A trip on Christmas Eve up the backbone of Virginia despite colds and rain. Wrapping presents till midnight, with a 6 year old nephew setting out carrots for reindeer and cookies for Santa. Opening presents all this morning with same excited nephew, my brother, my sister-in-law, and my wife. The beloved extended family dog Seamus full of affection and snuggles. I made pumpkin pancakes (with cranberries and pecans) for all, with some scrambled eggs assist from Peggy. Played all day and took a nap with Seamus my nap buddy. This is Christmas Day as joyful as it gets. And yet still incomplete with my 87 year old dad too ill to join us, my sister absent to take care of him, and memories of my moms smile and laughter. A lot of joy and a lot of missing, including my extended family in New England, where my father-in-law continues to recover from surgery. And so it is all these things. Merry Christmas to all.
