CHURCH OF NIGERIA HONOURS ABE, OTHERS The Senator representing Rivers South-East in the National Assembly, Magnus Abe has been honoured with the Nehemiah award by the Diocese of Ogoni in the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion. The award instituted by the Diocese in appreciation of Nehemiah’s efforts in the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the purification of Jewish Community, follows Senator Abe’s outstanding contributions to the growth of the Church in Ogoniland and society in general. Also honoured as Nehemiah’s awardees at the Cathedral of All Saints, Bori in Khana local government area of Rivers State were the Commissioner for Works, Victor Giadom, Paramount Ruler of Kpite, Mene Samuel Nnee and Prince Princewill Gininwa. Presenting the award, during a special thanksgiving service, to mark his 9th anniversary celebration, the Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Solomon Gberegbara explained that the awardees have spent time and resources in the promotion of Church activities and evangelism in Ogoniland. He particularly praised Senator Abe for emulating his late father, Apollos Lekagha Abe who was a Rev. Canon in the Anglican Church and a Lawmaker in Rivers State and thanked him for prioritizing the growth of the body of Christ in Ogoniland. “Senator Magnus Abe has contributed a lot to the development of the Church in Ogoniland. He has spent lots of money towards the growth of this Diocese and has ensured that we maintain regular contact with government at all levels”. He said. Responding, Senator Abe flanked by his wife Bariyaah, praised the synergy between the Diocese and government, saying “relationship between the Church and Government dates back to centuries”. “From time immemorial, the Church has been part of government. Anybody who says the Anglican Church should not stand with the government does not know the Church very well”. He said. Senator Abe, who is also the Chancellor of the Diocese, thanked the Bishop for the honour done him and other awardees, promising to contribute more towards the development of the Church in Ogoniland and society in general.
