COLUMBUS DAY Today, Oct. 13, is Columbus Day, a day in which we honor Christopher Columbus, one of the bravest sailors the world has ever known. On August 13,1492, Columbus, with his fleet of three ships, sailed from Palos, Spain. They were looking for a short route to India, China, and the nations of the Orient. Finally, after sailing longer in one direction without sight of land than anyone had ever sailed before, and after a threatened mutiny by his crew, Columbus landed on an island in the Bahamas on Oct. 12,1492. Thus the New World was discovered by the adventurous western Europeans, and the world has never been the same since. It is a known fact that, besides a compass, Columbus had no sailing instruments that he could rely on. He gave credit for his discovery to God. In his diary he wrote, It was the Lord who put it into my mind to make this trip. And for the making of this journey, I did not rely on intellect or charts, but rather on the marvelous illuminating light of the Holy Spirit of God. Somebody said, If Columbus had turned back, no one would have blamed him; no one would have remembered him either.
