COMING SOON: PHUKET! Im Moving To Thailand - Going Away Extravaganza!! THE PLAN -- This week, I will find be able to start the process of getting a tourist visa to help me relocate my pudgy white booty to Thailand, a land totally out of my comfort zone and rife with reasons to get off my ass. Also, a land significantly closer to my children than the Great Wet North. TAKE MY STUFF - I WONT -- I have a fairly small apartment here in East Vancouver, but it has some pretty cool stuff in it. A few computers, a few guitars, a bunch of clothes, a few books, lots of electronics, a bunch of video games, kitchen stuff, furniture (double bed, futon, chiffarobe, small dresser, mostly-not-broken overstuffed chair & ottoman, blanket chest, saddle bench, desk, two office chairs (why?) and some cool side pieces). I also have a 2006 Ford Focus with new brakes. SLIDING SCALE ESTATE SALE? YOU BET! -- I despise negotiation and I dont like placing monetary value on things. If there is something that I have, and you want it, you know what youre willing & able to give for it... so just do that. In some situations, you may need or want something very badly - for yourself or someone you care about - but not be able to give anything. Thats totally fine, just tell me what you need and it will be yours. Youre all good people... Im not friends with the sort of person who would totally take advantage of me to just, say, grab all my stuff and sell it on craigslist. BUT JOHN, WHY ARENT *YOU* PUTTING ALL YOUR STUFF ON CRAIGSLIST?? Thats a good question, and Im glad you asked. I dont feel like taking photos of everything I own and opening up a couple hundred negotiations with strangers. Secondly, I dont like negotiating or putting value on things. More importantly, though, I have a lot of friends who have really been there for me over the past few years, many of whom could probably use some stuff, or who work or volunteer at organizations that could use some stuff. JOHN, WHY ARENT *YOU* DONATING EVERYTHING TO CHARITY X? First of all, I think Charity X is a stupid name for a charitable organization. Hearing the name gives you no idea who they are affiliated with or who they are trying to help with their efforts and why. Secondly, I am SURE there will be things left over that can be donated. Charities will get some of my belongings, fear not. Thirdly, stop judging me and get back to reading this status update. OKAY, WHEN WILL THIS TAKE PLACE? Im not entirely sure yet. Ill know soon when Im travelling, and that will largely determine the date of the PHUKET party. Most likely in about a month. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU HAVE THAT YOU WONT LET PEOPLE BUY FROM YOU AT THE PHUKET, IM MOVING TO THAILAND PARTY? Im going to keep a guitar, some select clothes, my CPAP machine and a few small trinkets with a lot of sentimental value. Anything else I need, Ill buy when I get to Thailand. YOU KNOW THAT ITS PRONOUNCED MORE LIKE POO-KET, RIGHT? Yeah, I know... but when you read it in your mind the other way, its kind of funny. NO, IT ACTUALLY ISNT AT ALL FUNNY. Seriously? Youre supposed to be asking the questions, not critiquing my sense of humour. Next question, please. IF YOU SAY IT THAT WAY IN THAILAND, THEY WONT THINK ITS FUNNY. Next question, please. DO YOU THINK THEY WILL FIND IT FUNNY IF YOU PRONOUNCE PHUKET INAPPROPRIATELY IN THAILAND? BECAUSE I SURE DONT. Right. Im going to do the rest of this on my own. Phuk off. ..... To recap - probably in 4 weeks or so, Im going to ask all my local friends to come by and take my worldly possession off my hands, giving anything they feel comfortable giving in exchange (hugs are legal tender in my apartment - emphasis on tender!). This will also be a great time to come see me before I leave, though maybe Ill have a goodbye dinner or something before I go. Items will be first-come first served. If you wanted to give me $200 for something and someone else wanted to give me $5 for it earlier, I cant help you. More Info To Come - stay tuned!! . *P.S. I wrote this after being awake for 20 hours, but I totally thought of the idea during a time of greater rest and sanity. Its legit!
