COMMON CORE MATH MOMENT #8 Continuing with the documentary from last night..... 6. A little more concerning how common core was agreed to sight unseen by 45 state governors around 2010: Recall that the main reason for this was that $4.3 billion was up for grabs. Thats old news from last night. But heres some additional tid-bits. I keep reading that Wash DC only gave the governors 2 months to make a decision. And that those two months coincided to a time when most state legislatures were not in session. The result? There was no time for the states to evaluate what they were signing up for. How about that! And they did so anyway. Sigh. 7. But like I said last night, just because the states didnt know what they were agreeing to, this didnt make it bad. It could have been great. But here is in fact the worst problem with common core math (and its NOT 2nd grade arithmetic). The worst problem is that it sets the upper bar for high school graduation to only be completion of Algebra II. Not Trigonometry, not Pre-Calculus, and certainly not Calculus. Only Algebra II. 8. But surely the schools will teach Trig and Calculus anyway? you ask. Well maybe. But frankly, if you thought of that question, youre not thinking dark enough. The real problem, according to people like Prof James Milgram, is that colleges are now being pressured to accept students with only Algebra II educations and then give them full college credit for Trig and PreCalc classes. That might be fine for a community college. But it is completely unacceptable for top-flight technical colleges (like Georgia Tech) (PS - Did you know that GT is now ranked #9 in the whole wide world for engineering?!). 9. Why is it unacceptable? Because these colleges ONLY get 4 years to try to turn silly high school kids into scientists and engineers. And now, they would be expected to let classes like Trig and PreCalc consume part of that 4 years instead of them being considered to be remedial classes like they should be. This leaves even less time during those 4 yrs to take serious stuff. Do you really want the next airplane you fly on to be designed by somebody with a new engineering degree, but who doesnt actually know what theyre doing? Well, thats about it for common core math. But thats nowhere near all for common core as a whole. Thats because its much more than just math. Tomorrow night... English. Ive only got 1 or 2 posts worth of English news. But I think youll agree that common core English is even worse than common core math. Why? Because the liberal loons have taken over common core English.
