CONFERENCE CALL FOR PAPERS “ENGLISH FOR EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN EAST AFRICA” Strathmore University Writing Centre and Learning and Testing Services of East Africa (LTS) have come together to host the first English Language Teaching and Communication conference in the region. The theme of the conference is English for Effective Communication: Challenges and Opportunities in East Africa. The conference will be held at Strathmore University in Nairobi, Kenya on 16th and 17th April 2015. The conference will bring together stakeholders with an interest in communication skills and English language teaching, testing, and certification. These include university Writing and Language Centres, educators at all levels of education, publishers, scholars of communication, linguistics and related studies, policy makers, researchers, employers, students, curriculum developers, and media practitioners. GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF PAPERS The theme will allow a wide-range of research in English language proficiency in East Africa and beyond, with a focus on communication in written and spoken English. We invite you to participate in this event in order to listen to the latest research findings, present your work before a regional audience, network, build new relationships, and join the regional English language teaching community. PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ABSTRACTS ON ANY OF THE FOLLOWING OR RELATED THEMATIC AREAS: • Why English matters • Industry perspectives on standards of English language • Experiences of teaching English within the East Africa region • Urban and rural experiences in teaching of English • The effects of new media on teaching and learning English • Testing and certification of proficiency in English in East Africa • International standards in English proficiency • Effective language teaching methods and techniques • Importance and challenges of English within multinational organizations • Defining international standards through research in English language testing and certification • Relationship between learning English and other languages (vernacular, regional or international languages) • Doing business in English • National policies impacting English language teaching and standards in East Africa KEY DATES & DEADLINES: 1. 21st Nov 2014: Submit an abstract of not more than 250 words. 2. 15th Dec 2014: Notification of Acceptance of Abstracts 3. 28th Feb 2015: Submission of draft paper 4. 28th Mar 2015: Submission of final paper. 5. 16th & 17th April 2014 - Dates of the conference The proceedings of the conference will be published.
