CONGRESSMEN PRETEND TO BE UNEMPLOYED AND DESTITUTE FOR ONLY FIFTEEN MINUTES Billed as a lesson in empathy, Members of Congress and their staff role played being unemployed and destitute. They made “pit stops” at the homeless shelter, pawn shop, grocery store, bank to cash an unemployment check, and a general employment table. The game – and it was only a game – was over in 15 minutes. The event was the brain child of Entergy, an electricity and natural gas company with revenues of more than $11 billion, and Catholic Charities. It was designed to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of LBJ’s War on Poverty. How ironic ….
