CONSTRUCTION OF THE SECOND NPP IN BELARUS IS ONLY POSSIBLE WITH A RELIABLE INVESTOR AND SALES MARKET The issue of construction of additional reactors in Astravets or another nuclear power plant in Belarus may be considered only if there is a reliable investor for the project and provided that there’s a large market for the electricity. This was announced by the Byelorussian Deputy Minister of Energy Mikhail Mikhadyuk. "If there is a reliable investor who is ready to build another nuclear power plant in Belarus, we are ready to consider the proposals. However, it is important to take into account the availability of a market for the electricity as well as the fact that we will have to re-pass all international procedures, like we did with the first station, "- said Mikhail Mikhadyuk. He noted that so far none of the investors proposals have been received. While answering the questions of the Lithuanians, the Deputy Minister of Energy said that the electricity produced at nuclear power plants today is very cheap. "I think people in Lithuania especially noticed the closure of their own station. Consideration must be given to the fact that many European countries, including France, Finland and others, do not shut down their nuclear stations. And those states that are planning to phase out their nuclear power plants, are rich enough and ready to spend huge amounts of money on alternative sources of energy, "- said Mr. Mikhadyuk. What was also mentioned is that there are over 60 power generating units to be built in the world. According to Michael Mikhadyuk, the nuclear power plant, the project for construction of which is based on Russian designs, is considered to be the most secure. "Before we chose the Russian project, we had consulted with all the global manufacturers working in the nuclear power industry – with the French, Japanese, Chinese, Russian and Korean ones. And only two countries offered us the technology. These were China with its second-generation reactors, but we refused it at once, and Russia, which offered the only project that has both passive and active safety systems. By the way, the power generating unit, built in China to a similar Russian project was found by IAEA as the safest and most reliable so far.
