COP ‘not very happy’ after talks with Govt Parties negotiating for upcoming elections The Congress of the People, one of the parties in the People’s Partnership coalition Government, is not happy with the negotiations among the other members concerning the upcoming local government election. The main coalition partner in the Partnership is the United National Congress. COP chairman Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan told reporters that the party is not “very happy” and would be consulting its national council today on the next move forward. “Yes, there was some issues; we met three times with the other partners and the COP is not very happy with the state of those negotiations and, in the interest of time, we decided to call the national council meeting and would make a decision and proceed, one way or the other, because October 21 is right around the corner,” Seepersad-Bachan said as she referred to the election date for the local government election. Asked what caused the negotiations to go sour, Seepersad-Bachan said she preferred not to comment on that as it would be unfair to both the other partners and the general council to bring it into the public domain. Asked about another election scheduled for, at the latest, December 23, the by-election for the St Joseph constituency, and the possibility the COP would contest the seat, Seepersad-Bachan said: “We are a political party and that is open to us.” The Public Administration Minister said the COP will take the issue up with the national council to determine if the party would be putting up a candidate at all, adding that over the next two weeks, the party would make a decision on that issue. On the issue of calls by interim political leader of the Independent Liberal Party (ILP) Jack Warner for the entire Government to resign, forcing a general election, Seepersad-Bachan said that is Warner’s prerogative. Seepersad-Bachan said the call was something the Government has been hearing a lot of from the Opposition and that was just the “nature of politics”.
