Calgary Deaf Community - Whats this noise Im getting about some folks squawking about being certified to teach ASL? I find it remarkable that considering I was a born a HOH dude, had to immerse myself in the Hearing, the Deaf, and my own world - observed how people communicate, and still struggle to listen to learn? And now theres infighting about who should be certified, or not? or at least complaining about it? Know what else that confuses me? Ive been learning ASL in a matter of a few years, and while Im regaining my confidence to read ASL, I still come across mixtures of SEE, pidgen signs, homemade signs coming from a variety of Deaf folks. Worse yet, I find myself correcting Deaf peoples signs, and that pains me knowing the person has been Deaf all his/her life, and the language is the only one they know of. How do I correct/help them understand proper ASL without undermining their confidence? Do I let them continue to use is, the, and and? Ignore them and carry on? Imagine being a Hearing person in an English world. People pronouncing words differently, or against English standards, or worse - speaking in Klingonese, and thinking its acceptable English. Its not. Everyone is still confused, and still unclear what message was conveyed here. Now imagine Deaf people signing with different versions of sign language, but nothing consistent, and worse yet - imagine the miscommunications, the anger, and resentment we experience. WE NEED CONSISTENT ASL SO ALL DEAF, AND FUTURE DEAF UNDERSTAND ONE ANOTHER. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DEAF PEOPLE NEED TO STOP THE INFIGHTING WITH OTHER DEAF, AND PUT ASIDE THEIR EGOS FOR THE SAKE OF THE COMMUNITY, AND THEIR FUTURE! LEARN TO LISTEN! NOT POINT FINGERS AT ONE ANOTHER AND BLAME THEM! IF WE DO THAT, WE HAVE ONLY OURSELVES TO BLAME! /end rants, and stomps off the shouting box
