It is strongly associated with negative development outcomes, and is usually accompanied by low levels of achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. To address these issues 42 states established the Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence and Development in 2006, as a high-level diplomatic initiative to support states and civil society actors to achieve measurable reductions in the global burden of armed violence in conflict and non-conflict settings by 2015 and beyond. To date, 112 states have endorsed the Declaration. Since 2006, regular Review Conferences have brought together experts and policy-makers to assess progress and implementation of the Geneva Declaration, to highlight important elements of the armed violence reduction and prevention agenda, to survey effective policies and practices, and to build momentum behind the Geneva Declaration’s core objectives. Ministerial Review Conferences were held in Geneva in 2008 and in 2011. In 2014 a series of regional conferences will facilitate greater participation at the regional level. Conferences will review implementation of the Geneva Declaration commitments and will gather support for the meaningful integration of armed violence reduction and prevention into national and international development processes, including the post-2015 development framework that will follow on from the Millennium Development Goals.
