Calling all supporters of Pius X High School in Lincoln - a minute a day can help the school win $100,000! *** Pius X Breaks into Top 10 High Schools in State Farm’s Celebrate My Drive Contest, Seeks Community Support In an effort to help keep teenagers safe on the road, Pius X is participating in this year’s Celebrate My Drive®, a program that’s all about celebrating the fun of getting one’s driver’s license while promoting safe driving among teens. By participating in this program, Pius X is competing with high schools around the country to win one of ten $100,000 grants and ninety $25,000 grants from State Farm. Currently, Pius X stands in 7th place in the large school category, and the top 5 schools with the most participation votes each win the top $100,000 prize. The online voting contest began October 18 and runs through midnight Saturday, October 26, 2013, during National Teen Safe Driving Week. Pius X held a kick-off assembly on Thursday, October 17, in conjunction with the Nebraska State Police and State Farm officials who were on hand to educate students on impaired and distracted driving. Pius X volunteers and supporters will be asking for commitments on the University of Nebraska – Lincoln campus on October 23rd, 24th and 25th, as well as other locations around the city. “We are blessed to have the Pius X community supporting us in this effort to increase awareness about safe driving among teens,” says Pius X Principal Tom Korta. “At this time, we really need wider community support to bring us into the top five schools with the highest number of safe driving commitments. Pius is the only school in Nebraska that has a chance to win the top prize, and we are asking for the Lincoln community’s support in bringing the $100,000 grant home to our city.” During the voting week, supporters of Pius X can visit the contest website, celebratemydrive, commit to safe driving, and vote for Pius X High School. The contest rules allow for anyone 14 years or older to vote once per day through midnight on Saturday, October 26. “Car crashes have been the leading cause of death for 14-to-18 year olds for more than 30 years and State Farm is dedicated to helping teens understand the importance of safe driving.” explains State Farm Public Affairs Specialist Kelly Pargett. “Celebrate My Drive is a safe-driving program that brings teens, teachers, and the community together.” If successful in the voting campaign, winning funds from Celebrate My Drive will go toward both capital improvements and academic programs at Pius X including: • Programs and scholarships to enhance student driver safety • Performing Arts Center lighting and electrical upgrades • New computers for the writing lab/WordStruck literary program • Restroom renovations • Computer desks for the Business Department • Equipment and funding toward our Theology, Social Studies and English departments • Support for our Campus Ministry program As the central Catholic high school in Lincoln, Pius X is now in its 58th year of providing excellence in secondary education, serving 1,114 students in grades 9-12. Pius X High School is dedicated to a total education that is Christ-centered by integrating Catholic values in all areas of life and providing academic preparation of the highest quality in a disciplined environment. In September, 2012 Pius X received special recognition for Excellence in Catholic Identity by the Cardinal Newman Society’s National Catholic High School Honor Roll. This is the fourth time in seven years that Pius X has been named as part of the Honor Roll, including two Top 50 honors and one honorable mention.
