Campsie Police and Canterbury Council call on men to ‘Walk the Talk’ on White Ribbon Day. Police and Canterbury City Council are calling on the local community to join a march to raise awareness of violence against women in Sydney’s south-west next month. The second annual White Ribbon Day march, ‘Real Men Walk the Talk’, from Lakemba to Punchbowl, will be held on White Ribbon Day (Tuesday 25 November 2014). Hosted by Campsie Police and Canterbury City Council, the march will start on Gillies Street, Lakemba, and continue on to Parry Park, Punchbowl, where participants will take part in an oath ceremony. Campsie Local Area Commander, Superintendent Michael McLean, said police were proud to be involved in the march and say no to violence against women. “The theme of our White Ribbon march is around men walking the talk and we encourage everyone to join us to show that violence against women will not be tolerated in our community, regardless of the form it may take,” Supt McLean said. “This year, we are focusing on our youth, recognising that violence doesn’t only occur in the home – it can also happen in public, including the school yard. No matter where is happens, it won’t be tolerated. “This is about teaching young people appropriate interpersonal behaviour and ensuring they know there is no place in our society for violence of any kind,” Supt McLean said. Mayor of the City of Canterbury, Brian Robson said as a community, we need to break the social taboo of domestic violence by opening the channels of communication. “For too long, domestic violence has gone unreported, but it is time for that to change. It is time to say no to violence against women,” Mayor Robson said. The march has already received a wealth of support from the community, including major sponsorship from Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Greater Western Sydney Giants, Bankstown PCYC and Rad-1 Plumbing. Further support has been received from PAYCE, JAPM, Bankstown Signarama, Web Video Productions, Brooks Community Consultants, DASCO, Gift a Smile, and The Smith Family. Members of the community can show their support by joining the march on White Ribbon Day. Participants should meet at Gillies Street, Lakemba, at 5.30pm for a 6pm start. There will be food and entertainment at Parry Park, as well as a wealth of information on assistance for domestic and family violence. White Ribbon Day is the start of the 16 Days of Activism – an international campaign calling for an end to violence against women, ending on World Human Rights Day, Wednesday 10 December 2014.
