Cancer is currently the second leading cause of death for people in the United States, but experts believe that could change and not in a good way. According to a new report, cancer is expected to overtake heart disease as the number one killer nationwide. Researchers believe the shift between deadly diseases will happen in 16 years. The report was published by the American Cancer Society on Tuesday. Health officials claim new cases of cancer are expected to increase 45% by 2030. That increase would result in 2.3 million cancer cases per year compared to the current annual figure of 1.6 million cases. A local cancer expert believes part of the reason why the shift is happening is because the U.S. has an aging population. Peoples cancer risk increases as they get older. Some health experts claim they want the new report to motivate people to make positive changes. Linda Carte is the United Hospital Center Director of Oncology. She said, Instead of worrying about am I going to get cancer put that energy into how can I reduce my risk by changing my lifestyle. Experts predict there will be 11,700 new cancer cases in West Virginia this year and 4,680 people will die from the disease.
