Candice Smith Dietician Author of Healthy Eating Candice has been working in the field of nutrition for over 8 years as both a clinical and private practice dietician, as well as in a corporate setting in both South Africa and the UK. Currently she is a consultant dietician for the Vitality Research and Development team at Discovery. She is married with two little girls and resides in Johannesburg. Sometimes I think that being a Dietician is almost like working for the IRS. The instant someone learns what I do for a living there is a tangible shift in their demeanour and one of two things happen, either they start with rapid fire questions or they begin their “I am usually very healthy but” soliloquy. The most common question I get is “if you could tell me to do one thing to lose weight, what would it be?” Due to the fact that Nutrition is an exceptionally complex science I have only been able to summarize my top weight loss tips into four, not one. 1. Do not drink anything other than water, milk, tea and coffee. I mean it. Nothing else. You will be truly amazed at the results. 2. Avoid sugar like the plague This does not only mean table sugar that you knowingly add to food, this means all forms of sugar, both obvious and hidden (a tip to finding hidden sugars is to look on the ingredients list for any of the following words, to name a few; sucrose, fructose, high-fructose corn syrup, dextrose, honey, fruit juice concentrate) 3. Avoid processed carbohydrates as if they were sugar (they are) This means that the “healthy” breakfast cereal you consume every morning with a dash of honey will unfortunately have to go. As will the white bread, pasta, rice and wraps. If it doesn’t say whole-wheat or high fibre, chuck it. 4. Focus on fish Try to eat fish at least 3 times a week, and best case make it of the oily variety such as salmon, mackerel, herring or trout which will give you those sought after Omega 3 fatty acids which are so good for your brain. Thin and clever, winning combination.
